We are asked this question over and over: What is the roomiest carry on luggage? More and more travelers want to use carry on luggage only. Whether travelers are going away for two days or two weeks, they want to bring everything they need on board. They feel it is the most efficient way to travel because they don’t have to wait at the baggage carousel. There is also no chance of losing luggage or having it delayed when it is with you. I have taken a lot of short trips and have used different brands of luggage. For trips of five days or less I always use a carry on. My husband and I recently went to Ireland with another couple for ten days, and because the automobiles in Europe are small, we all decided to only bring carry on luggage and totes. I had my doubts about being able to pull off this off, but we actually had enough room for everything. Even my larger husband was able to pack enough in the carry on and tote bag.
The very roomiest carry on is the Briggs & Riley Baseline domestic carry on (U122CX). If you look inside this bag, it’s easy to see why. The trolley handle is not taking up room in the interior of the bag as it is located on the outside of the bag. That’s a huge advantage. The bag is also a complete rectangle without rounded corners. The squared off corners fit the template for carry on, and you don’t lose any space. THE CX part of the luggage means you expand the bag while you pack it. Then you press down and squeeze the air out! This makes the bag once again carry on size! Domestic carry on means you can bring it on most planes that fly out of or into the USA. We flew Aer Lingus and the carry on luggage easily fit in the overheads. The totes fit underneath the seats in front of us, and he used the Briggs & Riley weekender (256). I made sure it wasn’t over-stuffed so it would go under the seat.
I packed the Lipault Paris Plume 22” foldable 2-wheeled carry on (JPF-0%-020) and the weekender tote (JPF-1002.) I left the platform inside the tote in the “up” position so the tote would fit underneath the seat in front of me. I have done this many times on American Airlines! The Lipault luggage does not have structure, so you can keep sliding in more! I knew we needed a lot of shoes for Ireland, and was afraid we would not fit in carry on luggage. But, we easily fit, and both my husband and I had clothing for the ten days! I even bought shoes in Ireland and had room to bring them home! While the Briggs & Riley is the largest carry on, the Lipault held enough for me along with lots of shoes. I had enough room for warmer clothing at night because I was afraid I’d get cold with air-conditioning. (There isn’t a lot of air-conditioning, so didn’t need it!) Both totes that we brought slide over the trolley handle of the carry on, so you don’t carry them through the airport – they simply ride on top. I took a small purse that fits inside the tote. I also brought the Tumi Q-tote that folds flat in my luggage. It will hold water, a shawl, guide books, etc., when sightseeing. The Q-tote is completely soft so it will hold a lot, and stays small when you don’t need that much. You now have the inside knowledge on the roomiest carry on luggage!
